Twitter recently redesigned their suggestions feature. While taking a look through the tech category I realized the real challange to making Twitter worthwhile.
The first step toward making Twitter worthwhile has nothing to do with the tweets you write. Those are what makes worthwhile for everyone who follows you. The first step is choosing who to follow.
What makes Twitter worthwhile is discerning between people you care about and people you care to follow. They aren't the same thing. They can be, but think about it. How many people do you know who Tweet complete nonsense every time? Compare that to an @kottke or @gruber.
There is no really quick way to filter good tweets from bad, and with the ease of tweeting, a bad tweeter can make a multitude if posts in an amazingly short time. This puts the value of a good user to follow much higher than a blog. A blog takes a lot more work to keep up to date - you get less B.S.
So, is there an answer? Is there a good way to determine the good from the bad - the wheat from the chaff? I still haven't found it, short of probationary follows. I guess if there is a good answer you could always @ message @andygaken and tell me about it.
Who knows, you might gain a follower!
