In a NYT blog today - headlined "The War Between Apple and Google Has Just Begun" - Nick Bilton analyzes the deepening rift between Apple and Google. Even though this is nothing new, tech blogs have been chirping about it for much of the past year, it's nice to see the Times get it on record for non techies. The problem however is that many of Bilton's assumptions are off base.
But the friendship turned sour last year during a conflict over the Google Voice application and Appleās refusal to allow the software into the iTunes App Store.
Really? Was it that?
Or was it when Eric Schmidt sat on the board of directors when they were planning the iPhone (after android was announced he excused himself from those portions of the meetings). That must be it.
Or was it when Google announced they would be creating an operating system - also while Schmidt was on the board. How about when they announced a competing browser?
But the article doesn't really mention that - but it does try to compare Mobile Me to Googles suite of web apps. It does compare Picasa to iPhoto. I mean, it compares Youtube to iTunes...
I know it's just a blog - but it's still the Times. And I expect better.
